History Part 4: Deforestation is happening at an alarming rate!

Deforestation is happening at an alarming rate! In total, between 1990 and 2010, Mosquitia has lost 31.0% of its forest cover. Once thriving fishing communities, the rivers are poisoned through unethical mining of silver and gold increasing the amount of arsenic in our rivers. This is not only affecting the Miskito people but the countries of Nicaragua, Honduras and Central America as a whole! Not to mention what is going on in the South American Amazon.

The Miskito Elders and my family have made a great effort to collect and ship 2 ½ tons of non-perishable food. We spent over 16,000 US dollars shipping our goods from Canada to the Miskitu Caribbean-Atlantic Coast. The people and domestic animals are thirsty and starving but the food has been confiscated, withheld, by Nicaraguan Government officials from the most needy: children, senior citizens, the disabled, and pregnant women.

By working along with natives/indigenous people, we can reverse the damage humanity has done and continue to thrive!

I love the advances in technology. I can reach the whole world with little or no money. I look forward to seeing more inventions and advances that benefit all humankind. We want to be a part of the modern world while showing the modern world the wisdom we have.

I come to you as a mother and representative of my nation with our most urgent plight. I am reaching out to your humanity, Can you imagine, missing, breakfast, lunch and dinner, every day, after day and no clean water to drink? I am firm in my belief that through compassion and your humanity, we will reclaim who we once were and share our beauty with the world.

People were not meant to live in water. Starvation and thirst are painful. We understand very little is known about the Miskitu and the little that is known is incorrect.
